Day 5. New York, New Oriental Dance / Nueva York, Nueva Danza Oriental

ENGLISH (top)  *  ESPAÑOL (abajo)

*** ENGLISH. Welcome to my Day 5 of "20 Years in 20 Days" as a dancer. If you have not been reading my stories every day, you can still read them here: Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and Day 4. If you started with me, thank you reader, and 1,001 applause and a bow for you to thank you! There are 15 more days left "Hang in there!" Hehe. This publication is a summary of my two years in New York. As always, a
publication is not enough, but I will try to cover the most important stuff. If you want to tell me something, write it in the comments, I'd be happy to read them!

In 2005, I won a scholarship to complete my BFA in Art in New York, and I took advantage of my trip. Although my family and I had to make many sacrifices for me to be able to live and study in such a beautiful, fast and expensive city, and so take advantage of the full scholarship that I had earned, it was an enriching experience for me as a human being, artist and dancer.

I went through 1,001 things, but I would have to write a book to tell them. What I want to share with you is my discovery regarding dance. Of course, even though I was going to complete my Bachelor in Fine Arts, I had to take dance classes!

I enrolled in the classes of Andrea Beeman, Enchantress of Bioluminocity,  beautiful and excellent teacher. Subtle, knowledgeable, a dream. I learned that I had to learn A LOT. In that class, I also met who would be my partner to research as much as possible of the Oriental Dance in the city, and to admire dancers in Arab bars, explore markets of the world, in short, soak in this world: Habibah. Beautiful moments.

I also took the Hip Hop summer intensive at the Broadway Dance Center. The teacher was Bev, known for being a choreographer for Janet Jackson, Madonna, and more. Everyone was fantastic, I did not know much English and followed the instructions with eyes not by ear. It seems that I took a few seconds longer because the teacher stopped the class and said annoyed in English: "Don’t you speak English?" I looked back to see if it was with me (it was to me!), and I nodded: no (Haha) She, embarrassed I imagine, said in a low tone of voice "Oh." Haha. Again, I made an effort not to be so bad in class, and voila, the teacher invited me to be part of the December student's showcase! I imagine that I improved a lot (well, well!). I couldn’t accept though, because I really did not have time, but I felt very good! That moment was hilarious to me!

By the way, did I tell you that I stopped eating a full meal to take these classes? ... Ok, now you know.

I already knew the Bellydance Superstars thanks to the DVDs that a friend of my sister named Aníbal had given me (Thanks Aníbal!) and of course, I had an obsession to see them again and again: Jillina, Sonia, Salimpour, Dondie beautiful! These videos had accompanied me to my second university, and to this third they could not be left behind. Thanks to the mail facility in the USA, I decided to buy new videos and from there I got the "Live in Paris".

I showed my roommate Juan the DVD ... WE FELL IN LOVE WITH the dancers of Tribal Fusion: Sharon Kihara and Rachel Brice especially. We watched the DVD EVERYDAY: before I went to my university and he went to work. I decided, this I must learn. I Ordered more DVDs, this time instructional, I took a class with Sera in NY, and put together my program to learn this dance by myself.

When I returned from RD in 2007, I had already trained with Rachel's DVDS and many more artists. I wanted to enter this movement to the DR, it was too beautiful. I proposed it to the school I belong to in the past, but they did not want to venture into it at that time. I kept preparing for Tribal Fusion, and in 2008, when I was already a soloist, I danced for the first time in public. In 2008 I taught the first Preparation and Conditioning Workshop for tribal thanks to my foundation of contemporary dance, dance education, jazz dance, my ability to train myself and my passion.

If you want to know about my beginnings as a soloist, read my next post! Day 6.

Kisses to the right, kisses to the left, my heart to you, and applause for you because you read me! see you soon!

*** ESPANOL. Si no has estado leyendo mis historias cada día, aún puedes leerlas aquí: Día 1, Día 2, Día 3 y Día 4. ¡Faltan 15 días más “Hang in there!” hehe.
