DAY 15. The Teacher, The Students and The Show / La Maestra, Las Estudiantes y El Espectáculo

*** ENGLISH. To share the stage with my students of Tabla Dance Studio and Tabla Dance Company in Santo Domingo, and give them the experience of dancing in a theater with all the steps required in this type of event, I produced: Yo Bailo en Tabla: EL Recital in 2012; la Gala Rising Stars in 2015; and Yo Bailo en Tabla Vol.2: Un Cuento de Primavera in 2015:
*** ESPANOL.

*** ENGLISH. It was presented at the beautiful theater Narciso Gonzalez. The cast was made of students from the Basic I, II and Intermediate levels. I still did not have the Advanced level at that time. The theater was filled completely and the feedback was that everything was organized, the students looked fine and beautiful. The public loved that there were different ages and bodies in a bellydance show, and they all looked amazing and elegant. I felt very proud of what the students achieved.
*** ESPANOL.

*** ENGLISH. It was a gala to encourage the most advanced dancers towards the possibility of becoming soloists. It counted with the participation of advanced students of Tabla Dance Studio, Tabla Dance Company members, and, as guests, some students of Basic Level I and Basic II of Tabla By Paula, as well as four Dominican external instructors with their respective students.
*** ESPANOL.

*** ENGLISH. This was an experience full of magic dust, literally. Well, ok, not magic dust, but glitter. The energy of the entire cast was beautiful, they worked like a great team and they interpreted well the  characters that I had assigned them for the story of the show. I told them who their character was and their role, and they put their names and created their story as I asked. The students worked hard on their role and dance to fit them, despite not being actresses and having a combination of different levels of technique and experience. They also worked as part of the promotion and creation of the town "without name and stranger" (the set design).
*** ESPANOL.

*** ENGLISH. Kisses to the right, kisses to the left, my heart to you, and applause for you because you read me! see you soon!
*** ESPANOL.

DAY 13. Creating Butterflies for Tabla Dance Co / Creando Mariposas para Tabla Dance Co

Tabla Dance Company by Paula grupo baile santo domingo dominicana bellydance danza oriental
ENGLISH (top)  *  ESPAÑOL (abajo)

*** ENGLISH. Thank you for joining me in my "20 Years in 20 Days". This is day 13! If this is the first publication you are going to read, or you have missed some of my days/stories, you can see them in order on the right side, if you are viewing this from a Desktop or Laptop, and at the bottom, if it is from a phone or tablet. Thank you! This publication is about my dance company Tabla Dance Company - The New Art of Bellydance in the Dominican Republic.”

The reason why having a dance company was one of my dreams, is because I loved to choreograph and train the dancers of the created piece as best as possible, so we all get to do something harmonious, beautiful and elaborate. This had to do with my personality, but also with my education in dance and fine arts with some spectacular teachers that I had the opportunity to meet, who demanded from me the best that I could give (with love and/or tough love). In 2011, and a few months after opening my studio Tabla Dance Studio (also called Tabla By Paula), I founded the company. I chose four of the dancers that I felt had the potential, that I could train them and take them to the level that my experience and what I had seen asked me to. As I had learned, they had to go through an audition for months. The debut was in the show Stand up & Bellydance! Vol.1. It is wonderful to see the growth of these dancers and remember the experiences they have lived. In the 5 years of my study, I auditioned several dancers, and Tabla Dance Company had 4 different generations. Each era had its characteristics, but always the same rigor that I think a troupe must have to develop its maximum potential, as a group and future independent dancers.

I had and always had many rules for my dance company because I am a lover of quality, discipline, honesty, hard work and elegance. I thought carefully about the image, the rules, the way of working. I bought the necessary costumes and props and ¡A Bailar!

We danced in very nice events and the feedback went from "you look international", "you look very professional", "you do not look vulgar" to "you can tell the difference", etc. My intention was not to overcome or compete with any Oriental Dance groups in the Dominican Republic, but rather for my group to overcome itself more and more.

Tabla Dance Company by Paula grupo baile santo domingo dominicana bellydance danza oriental

Besides having synchronized choreographies and interpreted with love and a lot of work, another thing that characterized us was the creative photo sessions with a touch of elegance and humor. I had a lot of fun with these sessions, I imagined the topic. Then I told the photographer and the dancers my idea, and everyone lent themselves to my it: the photographer gifting his art and ability; and the dancers, their beauty, soul and the one and a thousand rules learned (sorry hehe).
Tabla Dance Company by Paula grupo baile santo domingo dominicana bellydance danza oriental

Not only the members of my troupe achieved results like these, also regular Tabla students. Remember that my motto was that it didn’t matter if the student was learning Oriental Dance as a hobby, for personal reasons, exercise or to be a professional, I taught them with the standards of a professional.

In my next publication, I will tell you what else I did during my 5 years after my return to my country, and in what other competitions I participated and to which international festivals I traveled.

Kisses to the right, kisses to the left, my heart to you, and applause for you because you read me! see you soon!

*** ESPANOL. Esta publicación es acerca de mi cuerpo de baile Tabla Dance Company -The New Art of Bellydance in the Dominican Republic.

Vol.1.

Tabla Dance Company by Paula grupo baile santo domingo dominicana bellydance danza oriental

Tabla Dance Company by Paula grupo baile santo domingo dominicana bellydance danza oriental

Tabla Dance Company by Paula grupo baile santo domingo dominicana bellydance danza oriental

DAY 12. My Studio, new dreams, changing my country / Mi Estudio, Nuevos Sueños, Cambiando mi País

ENGLISH (top)  *  ESPAÑOL (abajo)

*** ENGLISH. My fantastic world, full of magic dust and fuchsia: Tabla. Conformed by Tabla Dance Studio -The New School of Bellydance, Tabla Dance Company - The New Art of Bellydance  and also the teaching program ©TablaByPaula. This was my opportunity to show that the Oriental Dance or Bellydance is art, which requires theoretical, practical and musical studies; and that it does not matter if you want to learn it for hobby, personal or professional use, you can learn it and do it elegantly, with technique, knowledge and as a professional.

escuela clase belly dance republica dominicanaI tried to provide an environment like a home, and at the same time that the students came out learning and understanding the dedication of a true dance. Every detail was made with a lot of love and planned to provide magic.

I feel proud of my contribution to the country. With Tabla, things were done for the first time in the country, and other schools began to want to exercise them, and still try to: Wood floor, drinking fountain, registration forms, logo, slogan, t -shirts with school logo, class in levels, exams, diplomas, same costumes for the troupe, promotion including the students, foto-locas, creative photo-shoots, and many other things. One of my gifts to the oriental dance community of my country.

My parents, seeing my commitment and project, supported me blindly. My dad and my grandfather, who are engineers, modified the place to be able to hold more students. My grandmother (RIP) prevented an Oriental Dance store from renting one of the family flats, and never missed an event at my school. She said that everything looked elegant and that I always danced with "garbo", like a swan. My uncle Pupito (RIP) also supported my events, on one occasion, he even threw a hat on the stage while I danced. My father and my mother supported me unconditionally. After all these years, they understood what I wanted to teach them, and they were proud of my study and work. My sister was always my bigger supporter with Tabla, from its opening to its closing. She was proud and emotional with the work I did with the students.

I hosted amazing internationals artists such as Omaris, Mariana Mauad, Farrah Talei, Kakim Nagi, Sakuntala, and more. I thaught regular classes with levels, special classes and workshops of Raqs Sharki, Folklore and Tribal Fusion.

I was very happy and proud to see how caterpillars became butterflies in Tabla. Not everything was light pink, but since Tabla was something so beautiful, not only for me, but for other people, my attention is only inclined to beautiful things that happened. To know Tabla, a publication will not be enough. I invite you to see the Facebook Table Dance Studio, Paula International Bellydance Artist and this page.

Several people said that Tabla looked like a modeling school. And I think it is because it did not matter the age, shape or aspiration, I tried to prepare everyone as best as possible, from their points, to the placement of their chin. It is not because I wanted to be annoying, is that being a dancer, requires knowing and managing your body as best as possible, to be able to transmit your soul as best as your potential allows. Remember also, that my motto was that it didn't matter if it were as a hobby, for personal reasons, to exercise or to be a professional, I taught them with the standards of a professional performer.

We did many things, as I said to my Tabla Dancers: "shimmy para acá, shimmy para allá... y no ha pasado nada".

*** ESPANOL. Conformado por Tabla Dance Studio-The New School Of Bellydance, Tabla Dance Company – The New Art of Bellydance y ©TablaByPaula que incluye todo y también el programa de enseñanza TablaByPaula.

DAY 11. Conquering the Universe / Conquistando el Universo

ENGLISH (top)  *  ESPAÑOL (abajo)

*** ENGLISH. Well, not really. I was not conquering anything, it's that the title sounded nice for the story I'll tell you now, Day 11 of "20 Years in 20 Days": While I was in Los Angeles in 2009, I had decided to participate, in the near future, in one of the most recognized competitions when I was better prepared: Bellydancer of The Universe. In 2010, still living in LA, I decided that I had to take my chances and compete in 2011. This competition was on February 21, but I had to go back to the DR. I decided to participate anyway. I prepared my trip back to the DR, then from RD to LA, at the same time, mentally and physically preparing for what I was going to do when I returned to my country (I had months thinking and analyzing, and decided to open a school, become a tool of exchange between RD and the world hehe, and contribute to the elevation of the oriental dance in the Dominican Republic.

I started working on opening my studio in December 2010, months went by and I was able to open it in April. I really could not practice much for the competition, but I had it in mind every day, and I already had two years of practically intensive training and experience. Of course, I knew I should practice and humbly participate.

The date of my trip arrived ... it was a sad time for me because I had to return to the city where I had experienced many beautiful things. Also, that same weekend of the competition, I had to sign the divorce papers. I signed them on Friday morning, the first day of the competition weekend.

I was staying at a hotel recommended by the event, and God and the Universe put in my way (also staying at the hotel) a couple of Costa Ricans who were very kind to me, Mariana Carles and her boyfriend Manuel (today they are happily married !).

The Bellydancer of The Universe event was beautiful, very organized, rich in classes and guest artists, teachers and judges: Sahra Saeda, Amir Sofi, Jillina, Helena Vlahos, and many more. Wonderful, I definitely recommend it totally.

On Friday there was a welcome party at night, where I saw great artists dancing like Helena Vlahos, famous for moving coins on her belly.

On Saturday were the preliminaries and some workshops. I met other nice dancers and we started to touch up our makeup for the preliminary together in a bathroom near the dressing rooms: Roxy, Emma and the aforementioned Mariana. Because of the sadness that accompanied me, I confessed what was happening to me, the real story of my divorce. They were so nice to me, despite being competing with each other. But that's how talented and good-hearted people are. Even with some sadness and a lump in my throat, I had a great experience in that event.

In the preliminary, I was among the number 20s. I did not want to see other competitors because I never compared myself to other dancers, and I did not want to be tempted to do so. When it was my turn, it was something that happened in an instant. A stage with a lot of public, and a looong road from the dressing rooms to the stage. When I finished, I decided not to think about anything, and when I left, old friends stopped to greet me, and unfortunately I saw a Russian competitor ... oh God ... wonderful, you could see his ballet foundation and an incredible showmanship, Oleg. And it wasn't just him, he had two female friends that were incredible, too. That's when I asked myself "what am I doing here? ... "

I went to the finals. YAY! I concentrated on waiting for Sunday calmly, doing my classes and getting ready.

That Sunday morning I was very afraid. I was nervous and I wondered if everything had been a mistake, I had invested a lot of money that really did not spare me, and I did not have the experience or background that many people had, besides, it was my first competition of that nature, and I was sad. In my room, I turned on the TV to distract my nerves and, curiously, the movie Dirty Dancing by Patrick Swayze (RIP) was playing, the final dance scene specifically. I said to myself "Paula, why are you dancing? ... you do not dance to win, you dance because you love it, remember everything you've fought to be able to dance. Look at Swayze, that's why you dance, because of people like him, who inspired you, because you love to dance." I just started crying. I searched for my little cell phone and searched (I do not know how the cell phone's wifi worked) the Billy Elliot video, ... tears and tears of sadness and happiness haha. And I said to myself "no matter what happens, you're a dancer and you're here because you LOVE to dance".

The time for competition has arrived. There were so many thoughts, someday I will write something broader about it (yes, more hehe). What I want to tell you now is that I had a feeling of loneliness, but at the same time I felt the most accompanied person in the world. There was a long walk, passing through the public to reach the stage. People I did not know told me "we support you Paula!", "we support you Dominican Republic!", "Go Latinas!". It was incredible. I went up to the stage and decided to danced my heart. In a taxim, I thought about sad things, and I felt it, because one dances to transmit emotions, but then the song changed to baladi and my soul was happy.

There were several challenges, I won the second place of the Egyptian Style and Champion in the Drum Solo. The last challenge was the "Champion of Champions" where all the individual competition champions faced each other ... I remember it like today. I did my dance and I enjoyed it with all my soul, I danced with my heart. In the audience, I saw the Russian who I saw by accident in the preliminars, he was smiling and nodding, it was all so nice, magical and fun.

At the time of announcing the winner, I was speaking with Mariana's husband Manuel. The host of the competition, Tonya, mentioned me and I did not understand, I did not believe it ... I did not believe it. I had won the Bellydancer of the Universe Champion of Champions title. Thanks God and Universe! I jumped, I cried and I laughed!

The Dominican Republic also won, for the first time, a world-class prize for Oriental Dance. How proud I felt to be able to offer this to my country.

I will always thank Roxy, Mariana, Lindsay and Emma. They treated me like a dance sister of years. I will thank them forever.

A month after winning this title, I started my dance studio, Tabla. A project in fuchsia color and full of magic dust. After a few months of sadness and melancholy, I decided to focus on the beautiful things. Thank you God and Universe for all these magical gifts. In my next publication, I will introduce you to Tabla. I think you will like it!

Kisses to the right, kisses to the left, my heart to you, and applause for you because you read me! see you soon!

*** ESPANOL.

Simplemente me eché a llorar.

Siempre agradeceré a Roxy, Mariana, y a Emma.

DAY 10: Paulita Came Back / Volvió Paulita

ENGLISH (top)  *  ESPAÑOL (abajo)

*** ENGLISH. The city of Los Angeles gave me the opportunity to discover and learn a highly aesthetic and structured aspect of Eastern Dance. I enjoyed and learned many things, however, I returned to my country on November 22, 2010 because it seemed right to me.

I was living in Los Angeles because I was married to an angeleno I met in my country. He had told me that Los Angeles was where we should live and make our lives together. We got married in 2009, but we separated in mid 2010. Upon my return to my country, I made a request to change my provisional residence for the tourist visa I had before. I did it because for me it was the right thing to do. If I had gone to that country and obtained a residence card for love, when love was no longer there, I would return to my country, even if it meant to leave everything that I had worked for and built in LA.

For those who do not understand, a Dominican can visit (only visit, not work) the United States with a tourist visa, which is a difficult process to go though. If you are going to study, it is with a student visa ( I had it and the tourist visa when I studied in NY), which is also difficult. And to be able to live and work there, you need a temporary work visa, or a permanent green card or residence, both very difficult to obtain as well. A Green Card or Residence Card can be obtained in several ways: for work, for marriage with an American citizen, at the request of an American citizen family member, for extraordinary talent (to which I would apply later), and more.

I have not talked much about this topic and I will not do it widely because I like to keep details of my personal life and it involves others. What I can say is that, although I did not said it out loud, it was something that hurt me deeply, and I tried unconsciously to block that pain, disappointment, feeling of abandonment I felt. The divorce was by mutual agreement, I asked for it, but just because I knew that the other party had a change of heart and plans, and didn't want to say it.

I decided then to return to my country and I propose myself to dedicate 100% to my careers of painting and dance. And, of course, never remarry, as is usually said after a divorce hahaha. I was and I was not sad, because as I said, I had blocked my emotions. Well, at least unconsciously is what I tried, now I understand.

I expected a reception full of excitement from the Dominican Oriental Dance community as I returned to my beautiful country with the desire to show all I learned, and share my plans to raise the oriental dance (silly Paula, haha) However, several dancers, some close to me and some not, were offended and annoyed by me, but to this day I never really knew why. I know they said things, some stopped talking to me, two called me on the phone to tell me that I was bad and cruel; some that I didn’t even know would make mean faces to me at dance events... We weren't close friends because we didn't have the same interests but Oriental Dance, however, we were colleagues. I do not remember clearly, because my astonishment was such, that I decided to focus on improving myself and opening and working in my dance studio. And, actually, there were more important things to feel bad about... maybe... a divorce? starting again in my country?... hehe. To me, all that is very funny now, but back then, I questioned myself and, for a while, I tried to prove that I wasn't what they said I was. After a few months I didn't care till this day, because I understood that no matter what you do or how your are, people will see you however they want to, and it has to do with what they have in their hearts.  I thank those few dancers who were happy about my return and didn't lend themselves to that school silly witch-hunt.

I tell these experiences (a love disappointment, abandoning what you worked for so hard, the abrupt reception of colleagues) because if anyone who is reading this is going through or has gone through something similar, understands that it has not been or is the only one. Also, in the midst of sad things beautiful things can happen to you. Everything happens for a reason. Some doors can be closed but it is because something better awaits you. In addition, from that experience you simply have to learn something. And remember, that it's better to not give importance to negativity, and it's better to transform it in something positive.

I learned a lot since returning to my country in 2010:
  • It gave me the opportunity to develop, to the maximum power, one of my dreams that was to dance in theaters, create beautiful choreographies, produce incredible shows, transmit everything I learned and take the Oriental Dance to the top.
  • It made me grow as a professional and human being, learning from my 1,001 mistakes and my achievements.
  • It made me stronger and taught me to analyze myself and identify if other people's negative feelings towards me were provoked by me or have nothing to do with me.
  • The gossip created by some Dominican bellydancers (not all, some are nice and professional), allowed me to develop my ideas at a distance, and concentrate on breaking patterns, which was what Bellydance needed at that time in the country (and still does).
  • It allowed me to try to transmit discipline, passion, knowledge or inspiration to some students and public in my country.
  • It made me build something beautiful out of my sadness of a broken heart.
  • And although a woman does not necessarily have to have a partner to be happy, being in the right place at the right time, allowed me to meet who is currently my husband, the true love of my life.

Have you ever had a sad time you want to share? Life has so many little things, right?

Kisses to the right, kisses to the left, my heart to you, and applause for you because you read me! see you soon!

* * * * * * * * * *

*** ESPANOL.
